One of the most prominent eye surgeons of Karachi, Dr. Sharif Hashmani has been serving Pakistan for the last 30 years by practicing medicine in the field of eye surgery. What started as his small step to contribute towards the prosperity of Pakistan, has now resulted in an ever achieving mission under the name of Hashmani’s.

Dr. Hashmani started off with his career by organizing free eye camps since 1981. For the next decade, his focus was on Sindh. But from the year 1994 onwards, Dr. Hashmani expanded his focus to the national level, where he set up and operated free eye camps in Punjab, KPK (Formerly NWFP) and Baluchistan. Throughout the time, there have been over 450 free eye camps organized were over 1,000,000 people were treated free of any cost, with 200,000 surgeries performed.

Today Dr. Hashmani holds a number of awards and accolades for his services to the improvement of Pakistan. In 2004, he was awarded the President of Pakistan Norvel Christy OSP Gold Medal for Best Eye Specialist. Later on in 2007, he was awarded the OSP Centre Gold Medal for his Outstanding Services for Organizing APAO Conference in Pakistan. In the year 2009, Dr. Hashami received an award by the Asia pacific Academy of Ophthalmology in Bali, Indonesia for his Outstanding Services in Prevention of Blindness in Pakistan.

For his work in the prevention of blindness in Pakistan, Dr. Hashmani received the PICO Gold medal in 2012. Dr. Hashmani is also the founder of the Association of Cataract Refractive Society of Pakistan, and has also served as the Founding President of the Association. He has also served as the President of the Karachi branch of the Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan from the year 2006 till 2008. Today, a street in UC-6, Ghazdarabad, Saddar has been named after him. The street, Dr. Sharif Hashmani street is in the Ranchorline Area in Karachi, and has been named after him for his honorary service at the Muslim Association Eye Hospital since the last three decades.

17% of the adults in Pakistan suffers from diabetics. 30% of the patients have uncontrolled diabetics that later develop into diabetic retinopathy, an irreversible blindness.
